If you're looking for the answer to what is homeschooling, you've got an exciting prospect ahead.
Homeschooling is probably one of the most life changing choices that your family can make and brings enormous freedom to both you and your children.
Homeschool puts you in control of your child's education - at least in theory!
For control is probably the wrong word to choose, because it's often the very control that schools take over the way children learn that causes many of the problems in the first place.
I can make myself clearer by quoting from that iconic homeschool figure, John Holt:
Since I was homeschooled myself, I already knew the answer to what is homeschooling before I started home school with my own children.
And I
knew that the benefits outweigh all the anti homeschooling propaganda.
For us, the homeschooling advantages come in the freedom it gives us to follow William and Catherine's interests.
From needle felting to making a model solar system and having fun building a robot in recycled crafts, following the kids has got us doing all sorts of mad things!
Here's John Holt again:
Even with the best intentions, no teacher with 30 children in a class can possibly help every child to learn what they want, when they want and how they want.
So if you're asking what homeschooling is like in our house, it's being able to put learning into a real context.
The children themselves largely decide what they want to learn and we encourage them in any way we can.
One look at the home school teaching methods chosen by homeschooling families will reassure you that what is homeschooling in one family looks entirely different when someone else is doing it!
And that's absolutely right.
Every homeschool family is different. Every child is an individual.
The funny thing is that you may well find that even in the same family what homeschooling looks like one year changes radically a little further down the line!
So if you have young children, you'll be thinking of a very different homeschool schedule than if you're considering homeschooling teenagers.
One look at the home school research and statistics will show you the reasons for that, academic success being among them.
Increasing numbers of people are wondering whether school is the best place to send their children.
If you're still wondering: What is homeschooling? have a look at what John Holt says.
He knows that as a loving parent you have the answer in your hands.
